The great outdoors and the kitchen are great places to learn science! I
recommend going to the library and checking out the simplest children’s
books about whatever subject you’re studying –electricity, space, magnetism,
physics… Science books in general are written at difficult reading levels,
and these easier books will give your child a sturdy beginning in the topic.
When it comes to science, I always head to the children’s library section
first.
Some general science categories include
• Biology
• Habitats
• animals, life cycles
• insects, bugs, and spiders
• plants, seeds, growth
• human body systems
• Chemistry
• Solids, liquids, gases
• Physics
• Simple machines
• Tools and work
• Magnets
• Electricity
• Space
• Earth science
• Weather
• Geology
I hear many home schooling friends discuss the benefits of
4-H. You don’t have to be in public school to join the club. They offer free
instructive booklets on agriculture, plants and experiments, cooking,
babysitting, safety, crafts… Check with your county extension agent about
how to get involved.
One author I want to recommend is Janice VanCleave. She writes books of
experiments that are reader friendly. She covers many science areas
including Astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, machines,
molecules, magnets, etc! Here are some of her books you might want to look
at.
